Review: Gilgamesh Introduces Mock Duck Menu
The Pan - Asian hotspot of Camden, otherwise known as Gilgamesh brought in a mock duck menu to celebrate Vegetarian week at the end of May and Crumbs for Men were lucky enough to be invited down to sample the menu and were given an improntu 'taste challenge' by our fabulous waiter.
For all you Gilgamesh virgins out there, the location is very easy to find. Head to Camden's famous Stables Market and follow the flames up the escalator and in a matter of seconds you are transported away from Camden to an oasis of carved wooden throne type seats and opulent decor.
If it quacks like a duck... check it is duck
Taste buds at the ready, our Pan - Asian experience began with the duck and watermelon salad (both the duck and mock duck versions) made with crispy duck, cashews, mint and Tai basil. The dish was delicious, a great way to open the pallet as the watermelon clashed with the crispy duck's taste and texture that just seemed to work.
We moved on to the spring rolls (duck and mock) with shredded duck, cucumber and spring onion, served with hoisin sauce; both the mock duck and duck were clear winners, although as the food connoisseurs we like to call ourselves, we were not fooled by the dishes at all, more impressed at the vegetarian non meat options available to diners as a meat alternative.
For the main course we stepped away from the mock duck menu for a second and had to try the sea bass with Asian vegetables, though by this point our stomachs were very close to exploding and the walk to Camden station seemed particularly daunting. Might I add that didn't stop us one bit from sampling the delicious milk chocolate fondant, praline and vanilla ice cream from the dessert menu.
Gilgamesh outdoes themselves in terms of food, venue and overall dining experience. The decor alone and the fabulous bathrooms warrant a visit. Though please note:
Insider Tip: The restaurant is huge, I wouldn't save the bathroom break for the last minute... especially after sampling some of the great wines on the menu.
